Natural variation of ebony gene controlling thoracic pigmentation in Drosophila melanogaster.

چکیده
We identified the causal genetic variation for the difference in the thoracic trident pigmentation intensity between two wild-derived strains of Drosophila melanogaster. It was found to be the difference in expression level of ebony, which codes for an enzyme in the melanin-synthesis pathway and has pleiotropic effects on vision and behavior.

The genetic basis of adaptive pigmentation variation in Drosophila melanogaster.
In a broad survey of Drosophila melanogaster population samples, levels of abdominal pigmentation were found to be highly variable and geographically differentiated. A strong positive correlation was found between dark pigmentation and high altitude, suggesting adaptation to specific environments. DNA sequence polymorphism at the candidate gene ebony revealed a clear association with the pigmen...
متن کاملAnnotating ebony on the fly.
The distinctive black phenotype of ebony mutants has made it one of the most widely used phenotypic markers in Drosophila genetics. Without doubt, ebony showcases the fruits of the fly community's labours to annotate gene function. As of this writing, FlyBase lists 142 references, 1277 fly stocks, 15 phenotypes and 44 alleles. In addition to its namesake pigmentation phenotype, ebony mutants af...
متن کاملPigmentation and behavior: potential association through pleiotropic genes in Drosophila.
The molecular basis of pigmentation variation within and among Drosophila species is largely attributed to genes in melanin biosynthesis pathway, which involves dopamine metabolism. Most of the genetic changes underlying pigmentation variations reported to date are changes at the expression levels of the structural genes in the pathway. Within D. melanogaster, changes in cis-regulatory regions ...
متن کاملGenetic Architecture of Abdominal Pigmentation in Drosophila melanogaster
Pigmentation varies within and between species and is often adaptive. The amount of pigmentation on the abdomen of Drosophila melanogaster is a relatively simple morphological trait, which serves as a model for mapping the genetic basis of variation in complex phenotypes. Here, we assessed natural variation in female abdominal pigmentation in 175 sequenced inbred lines of the Drosophila melanog...
متن کاملSelection for abdominal tergite pigmentation and correlated responses in the trident: a case study in Drosophila melanogaster
In Drosophila melanogaster, abdominal tergite pigmentation and the appearance of a trident-shaped thoracic pattern exhibit similar biogeographical variation and sensitivity to temperature. These pigmentation traits may be under common selection pressure in natural populations or may be genetically correlated. To investigate the nature of this interaction, replicated populations of D. melanogast...
